The first US edition of this critical collection of reviews and addresses by English biologist and anthropologist Thomas Henry Huxley. A collection of critical essay by biologist and anthropologist Thomas Henry Huxley. The first US edition, preceded by the UK edition published the year prior. A miscellaneous collection containing arguments on emancipation of black and white, liberal education, on the educational value of the natural history sciences, and more. Interestingly, Huxley dismisses August Comte's idea of positivism in his essay 'The Scientific Aspects of Positivism' p. 147, which resulted in Comte's ideas to wither in Britain.  In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with some shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, some sunning to the spine, slightly chipped to the head and tail. Previous ownership inscription in pencil to the front free endpaper and last leaf of text, dated 1872. internally, firmly bound. The pages are clean with only a touch of age toning, as usual. Good
