Neville & Co. London. No date (Circa 1900)., 1900 Blue-gray cloth with front cover Art Nouveau floral decoration and gilt lettering. Gilt spine lettering. Pale yellow end papers. 150 pages plus two pages of publisher ads. From the introduction: 'The ballads contained in this book are the fruit of the seed sown in my heart during those early years when, still a boy, it was my pleasure to listen to the old turf fire legends, traditions, and songs that have cheered or saddened the hearthstone gatherings in the peasant homes of Ireland.' Some 22 ballads in all with a few of the titles here listed: Michael Dwyer; Old Ireland's Hearts and Hands; The Informer's Doom; The Justice of FitzStephen; The Death of the Desmond; The Eniscorthy Fight, '98. A haunting group with much of the deep despair and sadness of the Irish people woven in. FOUR LINE PRESENTATION AND SIGNATURE BY THE AUTHOR on the half-title page. Exceedingly scarce.
