Tight binding. 1st ed, 2nd state, with 29 letters. . BAL 4494. The 1st ed of this book with only 29 letters, all later editions had more letters. BAL also states this the 1st ed but 2nd state because the engraved tp with "(as seen through Mr Van Buren's spectacles)". 245 numbered text pages, a blank, then a 3 leaf appendix oddly numbered (235) - 240, then 16pp ads. Illustrated by a frontis, engraved 2nd tp & 6 tipped in plates. Most pages lightly foxed but no aging, soiling or marginalia. Original paper spine label clearly reads "Major Downing's Letters to Dwight". .
