Well illustrated with 21 original copperplate prints, including one bookplate by Thomas Bewick, two by Edwin Davis French, and two by J. WINFRED SPENCELEY. With the ex libris of William Archer Butterfield, designed and executed by J. WINFRED SPENCELEY, Boston (described in EX LIBRIS JOURNAL, February 1898). From the Preface: "My purpose is merely to set down… certain facts and incidents in history and biography which are associated with the users of some book-plates of particular interest, and to show by such means in what the charm of the book-plate consists."
