William Harcourt (1827-1904) was a British lawyer and statements, serving as Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer under William Ewart Gladstone.Volume I covers from his birth until 1886, and volume II from 1886 until his death.Written by Alfred George Gardiner (1865-1946), an English journalist, editor and author known for his numerous biographies of important figures in politics, including George Cadbury and John Benn.Complete in two volumes.A first edition of this work.Illustrated with three plates to volume I and five plates to volume II, both including a frontispiece. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original binding. Externally a little worn, with some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Some discolouration to the boards and edges. Ownership inscriptions to the front endpaper and pastedowns. Internally, binding is tender, with the hinges starting. Pages are bright and clean. Good
