Handsome, antique set of the "Lives of the Most Eminent BRITISH MILITARY COMMANDERS" by Rev. G.R. Gleig. 1832 1st edition (volume I is dated 1831; volumes II and III are dated 1832); Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green; London. Complete set in 3 volumes. Nicely bound in three-quarter leather with marbled covers, marbled page edges on all sides, marbled end papers and bright gilt lettering on the spines. Each volume contains an engraved title page with an illustration.
The contents are as follows:
VOLUME I: Introduction - General View of the Military Systems Recognised in England from the Earliest Periods down to the Present Time; Sir Walter Manny - Being a Specimen of the Military Commander During the Chivalrous Age; Sir Francis de Vere - Being a Specimen of the Military Commanders in the Elizabethan Age; Oliver Cromwell; John Duke of Marlborough
VOLUME II: John Duke of Marlborough (continued); Charles Mordaunt, Earl of Peterborough; Major-General James Wolfe
VOLUME III: Robert Lord Clive; Charles Marquis Cornwallis; Lieutenant-General Sir Ralph Abercromby, K.B.; Lieutenant-General Sir John Moore, K.B.
Condition:
Volume I has a 1" tear to the leather at the top-right edge of the spine; the top edge of the spine is chipped. Light wear at the bottom edges of the spine to volumes II and III. All volumes are tightly bound with no cracks and no loose pages; all covers are firmly attached. Beautiful marbled covers and all edges of the text block. All volumes have very nice pages with only foxing to the front/rear end papers and title pages. The title pages also have a very thin stain line along the outer edges...no other stains found. No writing or tears found. Bright gilt lettering and decorations on the spine. Each volume has a bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. Overall a very nice set.
