About This Item

London: James Christie, 1824. Leather. Very Good. 7" by 4". None. Samuel Johnson's influential and widely popular collection of short biographies on eminent poets of the eighteenth century. Complete in two volumes. 'The Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets' is a collection of short biographies and critical appraisals of about fifty-two poets, mostly of the eighteenth century. Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece. Johnson has been revered by some as being the only true great critic of English literature of his time. Possibly his best known work was his influential 'A Dictionary of the English Language', which had a far-reaching effect on the Modern English language. That dictionary remained the standard for one-hundred and fifty years, when the 'Oxford English Dictionary' was published. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'Augustus Terry Clarke'. In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart, with some rubbing to the boards and spines. Light cracks to the joints. Minor spots to the boards. A little fading to the head of the boards of Volume II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot. Very Good
