Beecher Snowe, born at Canaan Mountain near Norfolk, Connecticut in 1853, and who lived in West Norfolk, Connecticut at the time she wrote this brief booklet. Includes details of life in Litchfield County in the mid to late nineteenth century, including farming, the experience of having a home burnt to the ground (whereupon she was sent to her grandparents' in Goshen until the home was rebuilt), about travel to New Haven, marriage at age eighteen to live with her new husband's family, of hard work and little pleasure, of loss of a child, of illness, of a new war reminding one of the sorrows left by the Civil War. Bound in an old vellum manuscript leaf with text in black and vermilion, closure ties absent, approximately 12cm tall, (3), 539, (3) pages, vermilion speckled outer edges, woodcut printer's device on title page. Covers discolored, spine covering nearly chipped away, some holes worn through the rear cover along the text lines (ink acidity?), text block sound with a slight lean, pages age-toned but clean, very minor worming to far outer margin of a handful of pages, some pages cockled from past exposure to moisture perhaps, very minor dampstains to margins of a couple of pages.. Hard Cover. Poor. 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall.

Old full leather but with replacement spine. Boards are worn and marked. Astle Library ink stamp to the front pastedown and old pencil shelf marks. Some dust to upper edges of pages. Light brown stripe to the folding print of Door Church. ESTC states that Bowyer's records show 300 copies printed..

Each of these 200 special copies has an original print of the etching "The Lion and the Unicorn" , signed by Cameron, as the frontis and is numbered and initialed by the publishers. The etching was not issued separately. Illustrated throughout with 434 etchings, each with the original measurements, date of the plate, number printed and other general notes by Frank Rinder. Thomas Shadwell was a famous 17th-century English poet who wrote a number of plays and poems, many of which have been set to a number of songs. One of Shadwell's earliest plays was 'The Royal Shepherdess' which was an adaption of John Fountain's 'Rewards of Virtue'. According to Lowndes, Shadwell altered the play and simply published under a new title in 1669.
