The foot of the spine and the bottom corner the jacket's front panel is chipped. There is also a V-shaped chip at top of jacket's rear panel. Black cloth binding has spotting at top edges of boards. Original owner's pencil inscription reads, "Mary Stamp Subline (?) / from Nancy Hale Bowers / October, 1948." Nancy Hale Bowers was an American novelist and short story writer. Text has light toning at edges. The author was an English teacher at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now known as UNCG).

Taylor's first published book, a collection of short stories, most set in his native Tennessee. Taylor would go on to win a Pulitzer Prize for his 1984 novel A Summons to Memphis.
