From Prologue: In the family archives that came to me after my mother’s death in 1957, a few months before her 87th birthday, were two manuscripts in her hand, one a faint penciled account of her early years, the other, in more readable purple ink, a longer narrative of her residence in Europe, 1931 - 34. The latter was written after her return to California, to be entered in a magazine contest with the intention of recouping her lost income. Alas, I failed to edit and type it for submission when efforts to find work after graduation from library school and then the job at UCLA took most of my time and energy. Only after her death did I turn to the European manuscript and have the book printed in Holland as The Quiet Side of Europe, a better memorial than a gravestone.
