De Blegny, Etienne,Very Rare original edition of L'Ortografe françoise. Paris: G. André, 1667, 155 pp., elegantly rebound in green leather with gilt titles and gilt decoration to spine; top edge gilt, slight bumping to corners. First book published by Writing Master and Calligrapher Etienne de Blégny. a member of the guild of maîtres écrivains. This early pedagogical work is a treatise on French orthography. Notation inside front cover suggests this volume is from library of Augustin de Backer (1809-1873), Belgian Jesuit and renowned bibliographer.

Mediolani: Ex Tipografia Joannis Pirottae, 1817. First edition of this large and important work on the structure of the urethra. Four large engraved plates by Filippo Bedetti, engraved by Carlo Della Rocca, to the rear of the book. Green softback covers with some marking to the cover. The paper on the spine has has considerable loss, but the binding is still holding well. Internally mainly clean, with a little marking, foxing and few small worm holes. Plates have light staining to the edges, but still mainly clean and tidy. A scarce item. xii, 60 pp. 460 x 330 mm (18 x 13 inches). Ives, designed, and printed by Bruce Rogers. Aldus praised the original edition for its adaptation of the roman type in its use of the French language. His discussion of the formation of roman capitals by geometric means led to many advances in design in early printing. His models for the capitals, set within a modular grid, displayed an approach to their construction that was unique to Tory, and his commentary critiqued the parallel efforts of the early letterform theorists. Bound in 1/4 vellum over decorative paper covered boards, spine lettering gilt, spine somewhat darkened, in near fine dust jacket showing minor wear to spine ends, housed within publisher's slipcase showing wear to edges. A very nice copy.

This is a scarce, very early Charles Dickens book that was published when he was only 25 years old. "PUBLIC LIFE OF MR. TULRUMBLE, ONCE MAYOR OF MUDFOG" by Boz ("Boz" was the pen name of Dickens). 1837; Carey, Lea and Blanchard; Philadelphia. The book contains "Other Tales and Sketches, from Bentley's Miscellany, and the Library of Fiction" including a story by James Fenimore (spelled "Fennimore" on the contents page) Cooper titled "An Evening of Visits." There are 11 stories in all - please see the photos for the complete list of contents. This is one of the first stories by Dickens published in book form in the United States.Condition:Worn corners (the tips of the boards are exposed); 1/2" cloth tears at the top edge of the spine, small cloth tears at the bottom edge. The front board bows at the center just a bit. There is a crack at the front hinge between the end papers. This is a massive, custom three-quarter leather bound volume of 169 issues of "THE YOUTH'S COMPANION" newspaper/magazine from the 1850's. Although the label on the front cover states "1852-1855," one issue from 1850 is included. "A Family Paper, Devoted to Piety, Morality, Brotherly Love - No Sectarianism, No Controversy." The Youth's Companion was a weekly magazine/newspaper published by Nathaniel Willis in Boston from 1827 to 1929. Each issue contains 4 pages and features an engraving on the first page. Gilt ruled edges; intricate inner dentelles; all edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Frontispiece (with tissue guard) and 15 aquatint hors-texte plates throughout. Includes an advertisement page after title page stating this book would have been released earlier, but "impediments" and the plates delayed its release.
