About This Item
New York: Grosset & Dunlap,, 1942 Introduction by Bill Dickey. First edition, first printing. Inscribed by Lefty Gomez on front free endpaper verso. Additionally signed by Gomez on frontispiece verso. Publisher's orange cloth, front board and spine stamped in black, and frontispiece photo of Gehrig; lacking dust jacket. Good book, with light toning to spine, light soiling to cloth, some staining to front board, some wear to cloth at corners, lightly bumped corners, some soiling and wear to half-title page, and a closed tear to bottom edge of p. 85. Overall, a good copy, double-signed by Gomez. This copy comes from the personal collection of Lefty Gomez. In this biography, Paul Gallico tells the life and times of the New York Yankees legend, Lou Gehrig. Gehrig won six World Series titles and was a seven-time All-Star, but his career and life were tragically cut short when he was diagnosed with ALS, now commonly referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease." In 1939, he made a moving and now-legendary speech at Yankee Stadium, calling himself, "the luckiest man on earth." The story was adapted into a 1942 film, The Pride of the Yankees, starring Gary Cooper, Teresa Wright, Walter Brennan, and Babe Ruth. It was nominated for eleven Oscars, winning one for film editing. This copy is signed twice by Lefty Gomez, a Hall of Fame Yankees pitcher who was Lou Gehrig's Yankees teammate through the 1930s.. Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good.
