Extracted from Nouvelles Archives de Musée d'Histoire Naturelle. 1895, 3. série, tome. VII. pp. (83)-114 with four text woodcuts and two chromolithographed plates by A. Millot (Lit. Lemercier) showing Max and Maurice.Contemporary calf backed marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt. An extra-illustrated volume with 22 engravings, lithographs, half-tones and especially important 9 mounted original photographs by an unknown photographer showing the two orangoutans (living and as stuffed animals) with their zookeeper, their taxidermist (?) and with an exotic looking young male. It must have been a fascinating entertainment for the Parisian public and it is said that they attracted more than 100.000 visitors in 1893. They were imported from Borneo and travelled throughout Europe, public viewing was possible in Antwerp, Bruxelles and Paris. Within a year they died from stress and pneumonia. Cont. red morocco, flat spine richly gilt, gilt black morocco label. Covers framed by an ornately gilt border. Paste-downs and fly-leaves lined with scrotel marbled paper. Michael Edel was especially famed for his chess figures, fine turning work, the kings and queens with pierced petal galleries, the bishops with pierced tulip-shaped stems, the knights with horses' heads, the rooks as turrets on lobed pedestal bases. They are shown on plate I in three different designs and materials, with the most prestigious one made from ivory. A full set of woodturned chess figures by Edel sold at Christies in 2007 for GBP 33.000. All plates in bright contemporary colouring, very likely done by Edel himself. All three copies in German institutional holdings have an identical imprint to our copy, i couldn't trace a copy with the imprint stated in Engelmann, probably a ghost entry. A most luxurious catalog and of the greatest rarity with KVK and OCLC showing 3 copies in public institutions: BSB and Deutsches Museum, Munich ; Anna Amalia Bibliothek, Weimar.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
