About This Item

Indianapolis: The Marion Club, 1911. Pamphlet. Pamphlet. Near fine. The Marion Club Dinner Program, Indianapolis, Indiana, signed by President William H. Taft.. Twelvemo, [12pp]. Engraving on front cover of President William Howard Taft with red ribbon binding. Light soiling to covers, solid binding. Internally clean. Housed in custom blue cloth folio with title in gilt over red morocco on front cover. Signed by President William Howard Taft on front cover, during his presidency. Includes Beckett Letter of Authenticity. President William H. Taft spoke on July 4, 1911 at the Marion Club Banquet, held at the Claypool Hotel in downtown Indianapolis. He was hosted in Indianapolis by former Vice President Charles Fairbanks. Taft spoke on the recently negotiated Canadian-American Reciprocity Treaty, which aimed to reduce agricultural tariffs. The treaty was unpopular in Canada, where many believed it was a step towards "annexation" by the United States. With the election of a conservative Canadian government in 1911, the treaty was not ratified.
