About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. Best known for writing one of the most famous and delightful works of children?s literature ever to be seen ? The Wonderful Wizard of Oz ? L. Frank Baum went by many pseudonyms, some of them female. Edith van Dyne was the name he used to write several compelling novels, including the Mary Louise series set in the time of World War I.

The circumstances in which Mary Louise and the Liberty Girls was written in were quite turbulent. As the US? involvement in WWI was increasingly more pronounced, and everyone ? young and old alike ? was encouraged to help the war effort, supportive books such as van Dyne?s Mary Louise series were written with that goal in mind. Although supporting WWI is no longer the case, this remarkably compelling and well-written novel remains a delightful story about a group of teenagers who want to uncover the truth.

Mary Louise is a young American girl of 17 who is strongly inspired to support the war effort. With the help of a few of her friends, she becomes the founder of the Liberty Girls, and begins by selling bonds and doing everything she can to encourage people for their support. When anti-war letters start coming in, Mary and her friends make it their mission to find out who the source may be and figure out whether their goal is simply to voice their concerns about the war, or something far less innocent.

Aside from its enjoyable storyline and excellent narrative, Mary Louise and the Liberty Girls also has the unique benefit of immersing the reader entirely not only into the actual time when the Great War was waged, but into the mentality and psychological character of the people who perpetuated the ideals supporting the war.

If you?re fond of enjoyable juvenile fiction that carries a strong and somewhat controversial message, this well-crafted little story may just provide you with the entertainment and thought-provoking challenges you have been looking for.
