About This Item
Oak Ridge, TN: Union Carbide Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant, 1974. Preprint. Wraps. Good. Format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. 146 pages, plus covers. Illustrations. Cover has wear, soiling, and is creased at back. This was prepared for submission to the Atomic Energy Commission and the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center for Oral Presentation at the Physical Metallury of Uranium Alloys Conference, Vail, Colorado, February 12-14, 1974. Uranium alloys fall under the category of reactive materials and hence must be melted under relatively inert conditions. Selecting the most suitable method for melting depends primarily upon the tolerance of the final product for impurities and the degree of alloy segregation. To some extent, the form of the melting stock and final ingot shape may also influence the method chosen. This paper discusses the several methods commonly used in melting uranium alloys as well as some less exploited techniques. Emphasis was placed on melting parameters, impurity pickup and alloy segregation.
