About This Item

London: Henry Colburn and Co, 1827. Octavo. In two volumes, xxvii, (1) p. errata, 382pp. and xii, 394pp. One of the most remarkable portrayers of Lady Macbeth, but in a cross-gender role she was known for a powerful presentation of Hamlet. She was painted by Sir Thomas Lawrence at least fourteen times over the next 22 years.[44] The last of these, an 1804 full-length portrait, is on display at Tate Britain. Sir Joshua Reynolds painted his famous portrait, Mrs. Siddons as the Tragic Muse, in 1784. He told her that he had signed it on the hem of her dress because he had "resolved to go down to posterity on the hem of your garment." It now hangs at The Huntington in San Marino, California. A 1785 portrait by Thomas Gainsborough is displayed in London's National Gallery. Bound in 3/4 contemporary calf over marbled paper covered boards, raised bands, double red morocco spine labels gilt, bindings rubbed, some darkening and chipping to spine ends, joints fragile, damp staining to both volumes to first and last few leaves. contemporary owner's bookplate.
