London; 1952, 1955 and 1961: Chapman and Hall. First Edition. Octavo. First printings. The three volume trilogy of Evelyn Waugh's military novels, where he spent the war from start to finish as a junior officer engaged chiefly in ordinary regimental soldiering. He recounts the phases of a long love affair, full of vicissitudes, between a civilian and the Army. Men at Arms began with its hero inspired by illusion. Officers and Gentlemen ends with his deflation. Unconditional Surrender explains the mysterious origins of Ludovic, which were left doubtful before and completes the disillusionment of the hero, Guy Crouchback. A handsome and fine ser, all bound in blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt, one tiny bump to one corner, in fine unclipped showing only very minute wear to head of Men at Arms. No names or plates, only one small bookseller's ticket to rear of one volume.. Simply, an exceptional set.

Jean de Joinville was a 13th-century French historian who is best known for his biographical work on the life of Saint Louis, or King Louis IX of France. This work is perhaps the most authentic and best account of the King Louis leadership during the Seventh Crusade. This 1874 French edition was collected and edited by J Natalis de Wailly. Wailly includes impressive facsimile views of original portions of Joinville's text.

1958 1st/1st MARTIN LUTHER KING JR Stride Toward Freedom Civil Rights Montgomery

"Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story" is an influential work penned by beloved civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. In this book, King recounts the pivotal Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955-1956, a critical event in the American Civil Rights Movement. This nonviolent protest against racial segregation on the public transit system of Montgomery, Alabama, marked King's emergence as a prominent figure. The book not only chronicles the events but also discusses King's potent philosophy of nonviolent resistance and his vision for a more equitable and just society.

Description:
Eyre & Spottiswoode, London, 1951. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The first UK edition (first printing) of the author's first book. 8vo. 499pp. Beige cloth lettered in red at the spine. Backstrip and upper edges of the boards lightly spotted. Endpapers partially browned and with some additional light spotting which also impacts several preliminary and (blank) concluding leaves. A very good copy in very good non-price-clipped pictorial dust wrapper designed by Stein, with just a touch of spotting and tanning, several tiny closed tears and several slivers of loss from the spine panel ends. First published by Harcourt Brace in the US in March 1950, this distinctly more uncommon UK edition followed a year later. The novel was not a success: it was trashed by a number of reviewers, Kerouac's royalties did not exceed his advance of $1,000 and it was six years before the publication of his next novel, 'On the Road'..

Description:
A Fine tight copy in a Fine bright unclipped dust jacket. Inscribed "To Chuck, Alan Shepard" on titlepage. On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, and the space race was born. Desperate to beat the Russians into space, NASA put together a crew of the nation's most daring test pilots: the seven men who were to lead America to the moon. The first into space was Alan Shepard; the last was Deke Slayton, whose irregular heartbeat kept him grounded until 1975. They spent the 1960s at the forefront of NASA's effort to conquer space, and Moon Shot is their inside account of what many call the twentieth century's greatest feat—landing humans on another world. Collaborating with NBC's veteran space reporter Jay Barbree, Shepard and Slayton narrate in gripping detail the story of America's space exploration from the time of Shepard's first flight until he and eleven others had walked on the moon.

Description:
Moscow: Molodaya Gvardia, 1964. First Russian Book Edition. 351,[1] pp., with several in-text illustrations. Cloth-backed pictorial paper over boards. Early Russian ink inscription and inkstamp on rear pastedown. A few small scribbles in blue ink on covers and ink stains on cloth. Edges of boards lightly worn, front hinge cracked. Contents lightly toned, but surprisingly fresh for the quality of the paper. A good copy. The pirated first Russian book edition, after a 1963 appearance in the periodical INOSTRANAYA LITERATURA ("Foreign Literature") and a 1964 special separate issue of ROMAN-GAZETA ("Novel as Newspaper"). Like other books by foreign authors published in the USSR at the time, this edition is a piracy, with no royalties paid to the author. Nevertheless, it was a major undertaking, engaging major Russian literary talents of the day, with the still-authoritative translation by Nora Gal (1912-1991) and Raisa Oblonskaya (1924-2010), an introduction by celebrated literary critic Raisa Orlova… Read More

New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence.
