About This Item

Albuquerque: Printed at the Tamarind Institute, 1974. First edition. One of 100 signed and numbered copies. A portfolio of four loose images of Cowboys and Indians by famed CAA artist John W. Hampton. Complete. Each measures 15 x 22 inches and is a lithograph in colors. Housed together with title, introduction and colophon leaves in the publisher's brown leather portfolio. No copies located by OCLC or in any of the standard bibliographies. An excellent copy. Each plate signed and numbered in pencil in the margin lower left: J.W. Hampton, 30/100 and with the artist's device in the plate lower left and lower right, with the Tamarind Institute blindstamp lower left. John W. Hampton is very well known in the Western Art world and his paintings generally are in the realistic school. The images contained in this portfolio are accomplished in a very different style, one more akin to the works of Tom Lea or Jose Cisneros. In 1965, Hampton got together with Joe Beeler, Charlie Dye, and George Phippen in Sedona, Arizona, to talk about the need to preserve and promote the art of the American West. As Hampton later recalled, “We didn’t feel the necessity to wait around and let the Eastern critics tell us what was worth painting in the West.” For thirty years, Hampton was an integral part of the development of the CAA. He remained one of the organization’s spiritual leaders from its inception until his death in 2000.
