Description:
London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1910. First edition, only printing. Paperback. This is the first edition, first state of this striking, scarce, and fragile early collection of Churchill's speeches. In 1904, Churchill quit the Conservative Party and joined the Liberals, beginning a dynamic chapter in his political career that saw him champion progressive causes and be branded a traitor to his class. In 1910, when The People's Rights was published, Winston Churchill was a powerful political force and a member of the Cabinet. From December 3-11, 1909 Churchill was on the campaign trail on behalf of the Liberals. The People's Rights is a distillation of these nine days of speeches, criticizing the House of Lords (which had rejected Liberal Government's budget, thus precipitating the campaign) and championing Free Trade, a graduated income tax, luxury tax, and surtaxes on unearned income. Churchill's efforts were not wasted; as a result of the election, the Liberals would achieve a slim majority and… Read More

Description:
Dundee and London: John Long & Co, Ltd., 1903. 1st Edition. Paperback. We have never before seen or heard of a copy of this very early pamphlet, which is previously unknown to Churchill bibliographers Ronald Cohen and Fredrick Woods. The subject is the great policy debate of the time - free trade vs. protectionism. The pamphlet contains 25 items described in the preface as "principal arguments advanced by leading speakers in the Fiscal Controversy". Churchill's contribution is a condensation of his article in the November 1903 issue of Monthly Review (Cohen C224, Woods C32). It appears on pages 34 and 35 of the pamphlet under the title "Retaliation Examined" and is introduced with a brief summary of the subject and a small profile drawing of Churchill. In the article, Churchill takes issue with Balfour's Sheffield speech of early October 1903 in which Balfour advocated a retaliatory tariff. This was a critical argument at a critical time for Churchill. Free Trade was the policy issue that… Read More

Description:
This book is in fairly good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards, as well as spots on the outside back cover board. There is minimal bumping and fraying on the cover boards. The pages are yellowing and tanning, with some vertical fraying and warping, but the pages are clear of markings. But it is used with a suitable irony; and, after all, this long tale, though it may deal with folk in frock coats, furbelows, and a gilt-edged period, is not devoid of the essential heat of conflict. Discounting for the gigantic stature and blood-thirstiness of… Read More
