Apollo 13 (11 April 1970 - 17 April 1970) was the third mission of the American Apollo space programme, which was to bring a crew to the surface of the Moon. Astronauts Jim Lovell and Fred Haise were to land near the Fra Mauro geological formation, the site of one of the most significant asteroid impacts on the Moon's surface, while Jack Swigert was to remain in orbit. But a serious accident, which could have been fatal for the crew, occurred during the transit between the Earth and the Moon and forced the abandonment of the mission and the return to Earth.
