About This Item
This classic work by "the Father of Mississippi History" is considered by the Mississippi Historical Society to be the best of the early histories. Claiborne, a congressman, newspaper editor, and member of a family which played an important part in the affairs of the state, used as sources original manuscripts, newspapers, books, government records, personal reminiscences of prominent men, and his own personal observations. Contents include a narrative history of Mississippi from the earliest European explorations of the area and the establishment of the earliest settlements, through the creation of the Territory in 1797 and admission into the Union as a state in 1817. Mississippi Indians, including the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Biloxi, Natchez, Cherokee, Creek, and Yazoo tribes receive considerable mention. Biographies of prominent early Mississippians are an important feature of the work, and a revised introduction and new name and subject index are included in this reprint edition.
