About This Item

London: John Russell Smith, 1866. Second edition. Very good. Hardcover. Three volumes. 12mo. Half dark cakf. Spines in fivex compartments, gilt; marbled paper boards, endpapers and edges. Later green morocco lettering labels, gilt. Joints rubbed, light wear to the boards, light foxing to the endpapers and preliminaries else this is a very good set.

Introduction and notes by Thomas Wright, The Introduction is of bibliographical importance as it sketches the history of the early editions of Malory: Caxton (one complete copy; one incomplete); de Worde (two editions, one copy of each known); Copland; East; and finally the edition of 1634. Small engraved bookplate on the front pastedowns. Wright is a conscientious and painstaking editor, and his explanatory and editorial notes are useful. Gaines A10.
