About This Item

(Moscow Under Reconstruction, an Album of Diagrams, Topograms, and Photography of the Reconstruction of the City of Moscow)

Square Quarto 33.4x34 cm., embossed cloth, 256pp., profusely illustrated with maps, foldouts, and visual schematics. Text by Viktor Shklovskii, art and book design by Aleksandr Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova. Photography by Georgii Zelma, Georgii Pretrusov, E. Langman, Ia.Khalip, E. Baldyrev. Includes plans and graphs as color lithographs, photogravures in sepia, blue or green, overlays of maps, foldouts, layered pages. This work by Aleksandr Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova is one of the most wonderful collaborations in the history of Russian photobooks. It was executed by them concurrently with The Red Army, but is much more complex, dynamic, and elaborate than the latter. It was the most ambitious of any of the Soviet photography books that were produced in the 1930s. Every one of the contributors --- verbal, photographic, in design and execution – are significant in their own right. Simply put, the most breathtaking, brilliant of photobooks in the era of great Soviet photobooks, a masterpiece of book production.
