Stockholm: Latvijas Architektu Biedribas, 1959 Quarto, wrappers, 44pp. An expatriate Latvian architectural journal, published sporadically from 1950 to 1993 with a total of 21 numbers. This journal was devoted to covering some traditional but mostly modernist Latvian architecture and the profiles and works of contemporary architects. Most of these are by and for exiled Latvian architects; however, there are also profiles of Latvian architects and their projects in Latvia that are found. There is an English language summary in each issue that is announced. This is usually confined to the Table of Contents. Importantly, after 1940 no real architectural journey was published in Latvia up to 1991. OCLC finds only one incomplete set at the LOC, and two library holdings in Europe. Rare

Iakov Chernikhov (1889-1951) is known for his theoretical works which are encapsulated in the books he published from 1927 to 1933. As an architect, very few of his conceptions were realized and he spent most of his life in teaching positions at design institutes throughout his professional life. This journal was the official organ of the Moscow Architectural Society (MAO). Vesin's cover design for this number came under attack by Mir Iskusstva critic Ivan Grabar as "a disaster…consisting banality that is scary for the whole ideology of Vesnin and his associates." But this unardorned geometric simplicity is whatg set the tone for modern page and cover design for the coming decades.

Folio 35.5x22.5 cm., wrappers, 8pp. Rare: worldcat does not locate any holdings worldwide (but three museums in Vienna hold copies). This is for an unbuilt project, a submission for the Technical Museum in Vienna-Penzing, the design of which is widely noted by Wagner scholars (Kassal-Mikula, Das ungebaute Wien; Graf, Wagner Band II 1903-1918, etc.). Quarto 26.8x20 cm., wrappers, 94, xxiv pp., 13 plates with tissue guards. Cover and catalogue design by Aleksandr Rodchenko, who won the silver medal for the maquette. The catalogue includes more traditional arts and crafts, but with Rodchenko at the helm for the show work was included by Lebedev, Sternberg, Arkin, Altman, Vesnin, and a host of others. Quarto folio 28x23 cm., decorated boards, 34 pp .text with drawings, 50 plates. The architect and city planner Tony Garnier (1869-1948) was a major forerunner of modernist architecture in France. A visual survey of his many achievements, including drawings for Une cite industrielle (1904-1918), projects and completed buildings up to 1930. Garnier was a truly remarkable talent whose works spanned over the major movements of modernism and embodied striking solutions and continuous innovation. Large quarto 41x29.5 cm., (1) 15 of 16 plates of original lithographs with sheet backing, stamped Werke No. 51 (The publisher issued a number of folios at this time of decorative designs), in the original 1/2-cloth folio cover. Bruno Mauder (1877-1948) was a glass designer who was the Technical Director for glass industry and wood carving at Zwiesel from 1909. He subsequently worked in the area including the famed glassworks at Theresienthal. His work combines traditional German decorative patterns with Bauhaus abstraction and Expressionist imagery. He authored a number of books on glass work, but this folio is a stunning presentation of abstract decorative forms closely aligned with the Wiener Werkstaette and Secessionism. OCLC locates two institutional holdings in North America (Smithsonian, Wolfsonian). The present copy holds 15 of the 16 plates issued, plates very good+ to fine; the publisher's issued folio is in fine condition with all ties present.

Iakov Chernikhov (1889-1951) was a visionary designer, and produced the most original design work in the USSR. He taught widely throughout his career and produced an enormous amount of work in the studio, none of which was built. The present work lays the foundations for what would come to fruition in 101 Architectural Fantasies in 1933. However, it drew fierce criticism and Chernikhov was labeled a Formalist. Remarkably inventive, he only acknowledged Suprematism as an affinity to his futuristic work which looks ahead even today.
