"First Printing" is so stated. French and Indian war. Seven Years War. Robert Stobo (1727 - 1770) was born in Glasgow, Scotland and as a young man emigrated to Virginia. In 1754, he became a captain in the Virginia Militia. He fought with George Washington and the British at Fort Necessity. When the British surrendered, Stobo was one of two hostages taken by the French to Fort Duquesne. Within a few months he was able, with the help of an American Indian, to smuggle a letter to the British that contained a wealth of critical military information on Fort Duquesne as well as a careful drawing of its fortifications. When Braddock was defeated in 1755, the French discovered Stobo's letter on the battlefield. He was put on trial for espionage, found guilty and sentenced to death. After twice escaping and being recaptured, Stobo got away just in time to help British General Wolfe attack Quebec.
