About This Item

Boston, Massachusetts: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1965. Very Good EX-LIBRARY, with a pocket and a few internal ink stamps. Fair dust jacket. Eight maps including endpaper maps showing Major Stobo's travels in Canada (New France, Acadia, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Louisbourg, Crown Point, etc) and the American colonies (Fort Niagara, Fort Duquesne, Fort Ticonderoga, Fort Necessity, Annapolis, Williamsburg, Philadelphia, Camden, Albany, Boston, etc) between 1754 and 1759. "First Printing" is so stated. French and Indian war. Seven Years War. Robert Stobo (1727 - 1770) was born in Glasgow, Scotland and as a young man emigrated to Virginia. In 1754, he became a captain in the Virginia Militia. He fought with George Washington and the British at Fort Necessity. When the British surrendered, Stobo was one of two hostages taken by the French to Fort Duquesne. Within a few months he was able, with the help of an American Indian, to smuggle a letter to the British that contained a wealth of critical military information on Fort Duquesne as well as a careful drawing of its fortifications. When Braddock was defeated in 1755, the French discovered Stobo's letter on the battlefield. He was put on trial for espionage, found guilty and sentenced to death. After twice escaping and being recaptured, Stobo got away just in time to help British General Wolfe attack Quebec. It was Stobo who told Wolfe about a little-known footpath that the British exploited to capture the city. Original brown cloth. Three appendixes. Chapter notes. Bibliography. Index.. First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good EX-LIBRARY/Fair dust jacket. Illus. by Bryant, Samuel H.. 8vo. xiii, 421 pp + 16 pages of illustrations. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.
