Shelved Room C. Frederic Brown (1906-1972) regularly appeared in the American Science Fiction and Fantasy writing which perforated the interwar period. Brown sold work to pulp magazines such as Galaxy and Captain Future, whose readers appreciated the employment of levity and unpredictable endings in his stories. It was in these stories that Brown unintentionally established a lasting trope in science fiction: he often offered a "red herring" or a supernatural diversion before delivering the true explanation right at the end. Following World War II, Brown turned to writing novels and publishing collections of his stories.
