About This Item

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1910. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 10" by 8". G. Denholm Armour. A first edition copy of this humorous work by R.S. Surtees, featuring his well-known Cockney character, Mr. Jorrocks. Illustrated throughout. A humorous collection of lectures by English editor and writer Robert Smith Surtees, featuring his well-known character, Mr. Jorrocks. Mr. Jorrocks is a humorously vulgar, but good-tempered Cockney grocer who, in this work, provides a wealth of knowledge about agriculture, horses, cattle, and other items of interest. Robert Smith Surtees was a nineteenth-century English writer and editor, and his writing is often compared to that of William Makepeace Thackeray, William Morris, and Charles Dickens. Indeed, his work does sometimes resemble that of Charles Dickens, with its vigorousness and keen social perception. This work in particular is bound in the publisher's red cloth, and contains twenty-five tipped-in illustrated plates, all in colour. Collated and complete. Also containing the bookplate of Henry Courtney Brocklehurst, of the Brocklehurst family of Swythamley Park, to the front pastedown. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart, with the spine faded and bumping to the head and tail. A few dark marks to the spine. Bookplate of Henry Courtney Brocklehurst to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good
