Loosely inserted is a letter to the author's literary agent, William Morris Colles. The first edition of this very scarce work.Flat signed to the verso of the front free endpaper 'To my friend Arthur Morrison, with hearty regards Eden Phillpotts', dated 1896.Loosely inserted is a letter from Phillpotts to his literary agent, William Morris Colles, the founder and director of The Authors' Syndicate, Ltd. This letter predates the publication of this work, and is dated September 1894. In the letter, Phillpotts says that he wants Calles to handle the 'book rights' to this work, and says 'I should like to approach Heinemann but not McIlvaine, as he has already enough of my books'. He continues to discuss other business matters, and closes with 'new novel grows'.Illustrated with a frontispiece and seven plates by George Hutchinson. Collated, complete.With a publisher's catalogue to the rear, dated February 1896.An exceptionally scarce work. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip tail, with a minor mark to the tail of the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Inscription to verso of front free endpaper. Pages age toned due to paper type, but clean. Very Good Indeed
