About This Item

New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1940. Attractive reprint of the adventure classic, involving a prisoner-of-war balloon escape during the American Civil War, discovery of the titular island, and encounters with Captain Nemo. Jacket art by N. C. Wyeth, 'borrowed' from the Scribner's Classic edition. Undated, after 1929 but before 1956 (two other more easily dated G&D printings); '5050' jacket price corresponds to other G&D teen books around 1940. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured. Light wear to book, minor cockling to pages from no obvious source; jacket lightly rubbed with minor chipping, crease to front flap; ink name inside front cover. Text clean; [4], 500 pages, glossy b/w frontispiece.. Reprint. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Octavo.

Synopsis

The Mysterious Island is a novel by Jules Verne, published in 1874. The original edition, published by Hetzel, contains a number of illustrations by Jules Férat. The novel is a sequel to Verne's famous Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and In Search of the Castaways, though thematically it is vastly different from those books.
