About This Item

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1892. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". Charles Kerr. A new edition of this unusual historical novel by H. Rider Haggard, with illustrations by British artist Charles Kerr. A new edition of this work, published in 1892. First published earlier the same year. With tissue-guarded frontispiece and twenty-two evocative monochrome plates by British artist Charles Kerr. Collated complete. This work also contains twenty-four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of the book.Written by H. Rider Haggard, this work is a historical novel set in South Africa which narrates the birth and early life of the protagonist Umslopogaas: the son of a Zulu king. The work is unusual for this period as it contains only South African and black characters. Sir Henry Rider Haggard was a British writer specialising in romantic adventure novels often set in exotic settings, predominantly Africa, and is considered the father of the 'lost world' literary genre. In original cloth binding with gilt titles. Externally, very smart with the odd mark to front and rear boards. Minor bumping to head and tail of spine. Contemporary ink inscription to back of front free end paper, dated 1895. Slight rubbing to rear joint, causing minor splits. Internally, firmly bound with generally clean and bright pages; scattered spotting throughout and on fore edges. Very Good

Synopsis

Nada the Lily is an historical novel by English writer H. Rider Haggard, written in 1892. It is said to be inspired by Haggard's time in South Africa (1875-1882). The novel tells the tale of the hero Umslopogaas, the illegitimate son of the great Zulu king and general Chaka, and his love for "the most beautiful of Zulu women", Nada the Lily. Nada the Lily is unusual for a novel of its time in that its entire cast of characters is South African and black.
