About This Item
New York: Grove Press, Inc, 1962. About fine in near-fine jacket.. First US edition, first printing of the Beat masterpiece, also containing the first book appearances of Burroughs's "Deposition: Testimony concerning a Sickness," and "Letter from a Master Addict to Dangerous Drugs." A landmark novel, it led to several important court decisions on indecency and censorship. Certainly Burroughs's best-known work (it was successfully adapted by David Cronenberg into a fine film of the same name), it is also arguably his best and most enduring as well. One of 3500 copies. Copyright date aside, this edition was not actually published until 1962. And incidentally, there are no "states" of this jacket, contrary to some dealer's listings. There are only later printings of the jacket married to earlier editions of the book (ref. Shoaf). An unusually nice copy. 8'' x 5.25''. Original half black cloth, black paper boards, gilt-lettered spine. In original unclipped ($6.00) black and yellow dust jacket; no zip code on rear panel. Black topstain. xvi, 255, [1] pages. Corners lightly bumped. Jacket with only lightest rubbing at spine head and corners.
