About This Item
NY: Grove, 1966. First Evergreen "Black Cat" edn. 8vo, pp. 255. Little rubbed paper wraps, (lacks the black corner of the first leaf). With the 2-page Evergreeen card advertisement, all edges stained red as called for. With the Massachusetts Supreme Court decision and excerpts from the Boston Trial. This was first issued in Paris, in 1959. Maynard & Miles A2d. The edition adds the "Naked Lunch on Trial" and expanded version of an article which appreared in Evergreen Review. (See C118). The sinister drug crazed novel gathered from scraps of paper scattered about Burroughs' Tangiers apartment. Much of this was typed by Kerouac who gave the book its title. Because of censorship problems, the US publication was delayed and when it was finally issued, copies were confiscated by various authorities. Defended in trials in Boston and LA, Naked Lunch was a ground breaking book in helping to eliminate censorship in the US.
Synopsis
Naked Lunch (sometimes referred to as The Naked Lunch) is a novel by William S. Burroughs originally published in 1959. The book was originally published with the title The Naked Lunch in Paris in 1959 by Olympia Press. An American edition by Grove Press followed soon after in 1962. The American edition was titled Naked Lunch and was substantially different from the Olympia Press edition, because it was based on an earlier 1958 manuscript in Allen Ginsberg's possession.
