About This Item

New York, New York, U.S.A.: Grove Press, 1959. First Edition Later Printing 4th Printing. Hardcover. Very Good+/Very Good+. Published in 1959 to much outrage, but deemed "a masterpiece. A cry from hell, a brutal, terrifying, & savagely funny book that swings between uncontrolled hallucination & fierce, exact satire." This is the Fourth Printing of that First Edition from the leading publisher of Beat & avant-garde fiction at the time, Grove Press in Greenwich Village. In 255 pages, including an excerpt from the British Journal of Addiction, to which Burroughs sent a letter to the editor detailing his own drug use & current abstinence. Hardcover 8v has half black cloth covered boards & black matte paper over the remaining half, with spine lettered in gilt. Condition is VG+: very clean inside & out save for some light spotting to lower outside edges of the text block. Binding strong & straight, corners crisp. Mild offsetting to endpapers & tanning to outer page edges, else unmarked. The unclipped DJ is also VG+, with a tad of rubbing & slight chipping to both ends of spine; nicely protected in new clear mylar cover Free! Our photos depict the exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have!
