First published in 1880, "Nana" was once banned for its perceived obscenity. It is the 9th in author's 20-volume Les Rougon-Macquart series. With an introduction by Ernest Boyd. --- In Toledano spine 8 / green cloth / gilt titling on black spine & green cover blocks / black topstain / grey Kent endpapers / lacks the dust jacket. Likely published c.1939-63 (no publication date appears in book). ML #142.1. --- A Fair-only copy, with missing half title page, considerable rubbing & scuffing to cloth, dulling to cover gilding, prior owner's signature to verso of front free endpaper and general age-toning to leaves; else a sound, tightly-bound copy.; 12mo 7" to 7-1/2" tall; xii, 517 pages .
Synopsis
A neuf heures, la salle du theatre des Varietes etait encore vide. Quelques personnes, au balcon et a l'orchestre, attendaient, perdues parmi les fauteuils de velours grenat, dans le petit jour du lustre a demi-feux. Une ombre noyait la grande tache rouge du rideau; et pas un bruit ne venait de la scene, la rampe eteinte, les pupitres des musiciens debandes. En haut seulement, a la troisieme galerie, autour de la rotonde du plafond ou des femmes et des enfants nus prenaient leur volee dans un ciel verdi par le gaz, des appels et des rires sortaient d'un brouhaha continu de voix, des tetes coiffees de bonnets et de casquettes s'etageaient sous les larges baies rondes, encadrees d'or.
