Helen Maria Williams (b. 1761 or 1762; d.1827) was an English poet who sympathized with the French Revolution and emigrated to France in the early 1790's. She was imprisoned in Luxembourg during the Terror and lived briefly in Switzerland after her release, but she spent most of the remainder of her life in France. Williams published a series of memoirs and sketches for English audiences that portrayed life in France from the Revolution to the early period of the Bourbon Restoration. She also wrote one novel and translated a number of French works into English, including the American travels of Alexander von Humboldt.
