New York: Harper & Brothers, 1858. 12mo. 276 pages, plus [4] pages publisher's ads at rear. Original brown cloth, stamped in gilt on spine, and with gilt and blind rules on covers; yellow-coated endpapers. [19.4 cm.] Good only. Head of spine chipped to headband; shallow chip to cloth at base of spine and exposed paper colored to match cloth; wear to hinges and corners; tiny hole to rear hinge; some faint spotting to boards. Early owner's lightly penciled inscription on front endpapers: "Annie H. Stephens, Baltimore, Sept. 27, 1863." Corner chip to front free endpaper. Moderate foxing to title. Perhaps two dozen other pages similarly affected; the rest with only light scattered foxing. Slight wrinkle to some leaves along gutters. Mesh starting to show between two leaves, but signatures holding well and binding otherwise sound. FIRST EDITION. Complete with frontispiece portrait and 11 plates. The other etchings are vignettes appearing as chapter headpieces and tailpieces. Contemporary half dark blue morocco by Bumpus of Oxford Street (London), with raised bands and gilt tooling on spine, single gilt rules on covers, and top edge gilt. Penciled ownership inscription of North Carolina collector, Forster A. Sondley, on the front flyleaf. Tasteful bookplate of Sondley Reference Library and gilt manuscript call number on front pastedown. Ink stamp on front free endpaper, verso of title, and in margin of one other page. Three volumes. 19th century half maroon morocco over cloth with raised bands, gilt spine titles and decorations, and marbled endpapers. 8vo. xiii, [1], 436 pages; viii, 432 pages; and viii, 412 pages. Ex-Sondley Reference Library with tasteful bookplate on the front pastedowns, inconspicuous embossed stamp to titles and a few other leaves (including three of the plates), small number stamp on verso of titles and in margin of one other leaf in each volume, and faint shadow of a removed call label at base of each spine. Bindings are lightly rubbed on extremities, a little sunned on the spine, and boards show some light soil and sun (most noticeable on third volume). Light foxing to titles with only occasional traces elsewhere. Light horizontal crease to each frontispiece and short marginal tears along same line, in some cases neatly repaired, with minimal impact on images. Cleveland: Burrows Brothers Co., [printed by John Wilson and Son, University Press, Cambridge], 1895. [2], 272 pages. Original green cloth with gilt spine lettering. [21.1 cm.] Near fine. A few traces of faint soiling to cloth, hint of rubbing to base of spine. Embossed stamp on rear free endpaper, but no other marks. FIRST OF THIS LIMITED EDITION. No. 730 of 750 copies. The work was originally published in 1815 in London, where it was reprinted the following year. An American edition was also issued in 1816. There were no other issues until the present edition. Helen Maria Williams (b. 1761 or 1762; d.1827) was an English poet who sympathized with the French Revolution and emigrated to France in the early 1790's. She was imprisoned in Luxembourg during the Terror and lived briefly in Switzerland after her release, but she spent most of the remainder of her life in France.
