Johnston is still seen as one of most controversial Confederate military figures. He assumed command immediately following secession and continued in one capacity or another until the very end, when he surrendered to Sherman in April 1865. It was Johnston who recommended a fighting withdrawal against Sherman during his infamous March to the Sea.
