Charles Brown Tompkins, a pioneering academic in the fields of numeric analysis and computing, wrote the majority of the text, much of which summarizes the work of the Engineering Research Associates computer company, of which he was founder in 1946. I particularly like this quote: A new type of amplifier called the transistor was recently announced by the Bell Telephone Laboratories. It seems likely that this device will simplify computer circuits considerably. It will probably be competitive with the electron tube in total cost per stage.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published The History of Spiritualism in 1926, offering a thorough account of the movement which began in 1848 with the Fox Sisters, but had been brewing since long before. This is Proudhon's magnum opus, his analysis of what he saw to be the economic contradictions of 19th-century capitalism, which he felt would lead in time to an anarchist society. Proudhon, the first self-proclaimed Anarchist, coined the term "Property is Theft." Although a sometime correspondent with Karl Marx, the two had a falling out after Marx vehemently criticized this work.

The 1940s pin-up sensation Veronica Lake—Paramount's top star from that era—had more than her share of lows, and it is possible to portray her life as tragic. Yet a different picture of her emerges from this late-in-life autobiography, in which she comes across as deeply introspective and devoid of bitterness. In it, she recognizes both the bad and good in midcentury Hollywood, a town in which money "was so plentiful it often seemed that much of it was spent in desperate moves to get rid of it." A book which is now increasingly scarce and hard to find in first edition.
