Virchow founded the medical fields of cellular pathology and comparative pathology (comparison of diseases common to humans and animals). His most important work in the field was Cellular Pathology (Die Cellularpathologie in ihrer Begründung auf physiologische und pathologische Gewebelehre) published in 1858, as a collection of his lectures. Description:
Stated first edition, 8vo., original navy cloth binding with gold lettering on spine, in a very good unclipped mylar protected DJ with a sunned spine. A thorough early study of the origins of the computer. Charles Brown Tompkins, a pioneering academic in the fields of numeric analysis and computing, wrote the majority of the text, much of which summarizes the work of the Engineering Research Associates computer company, of which he was founder in 1946. I particularly like this quote: A new type of amplifier called the transistor was recently announced by the Bell Telephone Laboratories. It seems likely that this device will simplify computer circuits considerably. It will probably be competitive with the electron tube in total cost per stage.

Two volumes, 8vo, publisher's blue cloth, gilt. VOLUME 1: 8 plates including frontispiece, xiii [i], 341 [1]pp. VOLUME 2: 8 plates including frontispiece, viii [i], 342 [2]pp. Spines very slightly faded else an excellent near-fine set seldom seen in this condition. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published The History of Spiritualism in 1926, offering a thorough account of the movement which began in 1848 with the Fox Sisters, but had been brewing since long before. Doyle was one of the loudest and best-known evangelists for the religion in the early twentieth century. He, and its millions of followers, believed that we never die-we merely move on to another plane. Doyle's evidence, and the Spiritualist mediums who led the way, are all to be found within these pages.

Description:
London: John Murray, 1836. FIRST EDITION. Thick large octavo, with numerous illustrations and a folding map; original cloth (sympathetically rebacked with the original spine mounted). A very good copy now Mylar protected and housed in a custom slipcase."A breathtaking recital of continuous adventure," George Back's expedition charted over 1200 miles of new territory and made important observations on the Aurora Borealis, all while working under appalling conditions (Mirsky, 122). The original purpose of the trek was to determine the fate of the second Ross expedition, which had set out in 1829 and was feared lost in the Arctic Ocean. Back, a veteran of the Franklin expeditions, volunteered to lead an overland expedition north along the Great Fish River, which extends from the Rae Strait to the Great Slave Lake in northern Canada, west of Hudson's Bay. Notified that Ross had returned safely to England, Back was directed to proceed with an expedition of discovery during which he found the river now… Read More

Description:
Thick octavo, publisher's original deluxe brown sheepskin with Morocco spine label, marbled endpapers and edges. Octavo. [1], 602 pages, [6] pages of publisher advertisements, [1]. Frontispiece steel engraving of Johnston. Illustrated with steel engravings and a folding map. Professionally and sympathetically rebacked with the original spine by the Heritage Bindery. Internal contents clean with occasional light foxing. A very good copy of a scarce issue of this work. Often criticized for a perceived lack of aggressiveness, J.E. Johnston is still seen as one of most controversial Confederate military figures. He assumed command immediately following secession and continued in one capacity or another until the very end, when he surrendered to Sherman in April 1865. It was Johnston who recommended a fighting withdrawal against Sherman during his infamous March to the Sea. The Confederacy's refusal to implement this strategy led to John Bell Hood's disastrous defeat at Atlanta. Eicher 257. In Tall Cotton…

Large quarto. 460 pp. Complete with added engraved title-page dated 1708 and half-title. Engraved printer's device on title-pages and old ink ownership inscription on the first title page. Full Contemporary stained calf, professionally and skillfully rebacked spine with five raised bands, gilt red morocco lettering piece, all edges sprinkled red. Very occasional light spotting. Boards with some edge-wear, Frontispiece slightly darkened. Overall a very attractive, notably clean copy with a bright text. "Probably no other poet's works have been so often copied or printed, and hundreds of versions in every modern language have been made of the least translatable of poets. Certainly Horace far outstrips all competitors when it comes to pocket editions: all over the world, where the libraries or even the smaller collections of personalia of the great have been preserved, a well-worn pocket Horace is very frequently among them. . In 1711 Bentley was fighting against the angry fellows of Trinity College,…

Description:
8vo. two volumes. Half-titles present in both volumes. [4], xliii, [1 blank], 435, [1 Table]; [4], 531, [1 Table] pages. Rebacked in modern half blue levant morocco over contemporary marbled boards, Spines stamped in gilt in compartments, burgundy gilt morocco lettering labels, five raised bands. Some minor rubbing to binding, a bit of foxing in text with some marginal notations in pencil throughout. This is Proudhon's magnum opus, his analysis of what he saw to be the economic contradictions of 19th-century capitalism, which he felt would lead in time to an anarchist society. Proudhon, the first self-proclaimed Anarchist, coined the term "Property is Theft." Although a sometime correspondent with Karl Marx, the two had a falling out after Marx vehemently criticized this work.

Large quarto (measuring 10-1/2 by 13 inches), Original publisher's tan wrappers, now housed in a custom clamshell box.First edition of this study of the city of Thebes in Ancient Greece, written by accomplished Egyptologist Jean Capart, with the collaboration of Marcelle Werbrouck, with dozens of half-tones depicting Thebes, its major sites, and the archaeological work there. INSCRIBED by Jean Capart on the half title. Jean Capart (February 21, 1877 – June 16, 1947) was a Belgian Egyptologist who is often considered the "Father of Belgian Egyptology."
This work discusses the archaeological wonders of Thebes. It was written as part of a series for the Fondation Égyptologique Reine Élisabeth, which was founded by the Belgian queen in response to the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb. The queen chose to visit there to see the tomb in person, accompanied by Jean Capart. Jean Capart was a prominent Egyptologist who, among other accomplishments, directed the excavations at El-Kab. Upon assuming the… Read More

Description:
8vo, 281pp., first American printing. Book and the dustwrapper are in near fine condition—jacket shows minor fraying and a few small tears. Co-written by Donald Bain. The 1940s pin-up sensation Veronica Lake—Paramount's top star from that era—had more than her share of lows, and it is possible to portray her life as tragic. Yet a different picture of her emerges from this late-in-life autobiography, in which she comes across as deeply introspective and devoid of bitterness. In it, she recognizes both the bad and good in midcentury Hollywood, a town in which money "was so plentiful it often seemed that much of it was spent in desperate moves to get rid of it." A book which is now increasingly scarce and hard to find in first edition.
