Nashville, TN: Smith, Camp & Co, 1857. First Edition, First Printing. Cloth. Good. 5 X 7 7/8 Inches. 356 PP. First printing copy in the original embossed cloth binding. The directory contains the names, business, and residence of all heads of families and businesses in Nashville, Memphis, Clarksville, Shelbyville, Knoxville, Franklin, Columbia, Chattanooga and others. Several businesses including "REES W. PORTER, GENERAL AGENT FOR THE SALE OF NEGROES" have taken out full-page ads. The book contains the listings for Andrew Johnson, Cave Johnson and dozens of notable Nashville personalities of the day. Numerous listings for barbers and skilled laborers (various occupations) noted as "COLORED". Business listings and numerous vignette illustrations for carriage makers, printers, grocers, banks, cabinet makers, dress makers, hotels etc..<br /> <br /> Formerly owned by Jack Bass Jr., a founding member of the Nashville Gun Club and a member of the Belle Meade Country Club. Jack was a noted horse lover and Investment banker in Nashville. Several pencil annotations throughout denoting connections to the BASS family in Nashville. Some scuffing and wear to covers and spine. Minor losses to spine ends. Bass family inscription to FFEP. Some light soiling and foxing to interior. While a bit worn, this is a complete and original copy with a solid binding. VERY SCARCE AND IMPORTANT EARLY SOUTHERN IMPRINT. #122 IN ALLEN'S "MORE TENNESSEE RARITIES" - "Greatly expanded from the earlier Nashville directories, Volume Three was the first Tennessee directory to include business directories for other Tennessee cities" Ronald Allen.
