Edinburgh: Printed by the Heirs and Successors of Andrew Anderson, 1714. First edition. Hardcover. Good. Original full calf; quarto; [8], 32, 232, 104, [2], 105-163 (but 164), 31 pp. (penultimate section with page 152 misnumbered 151 with error continued). Boards somewhat warped, joints cracked but most of the cords are holding, covers scuffed, contemporary ink notes and ownership inscriptions to endpapers.

Thomas Halyburton (1674-1712) was a Scottish divine of the Church of Scotland and Professor of Divinity at the University of St. Andrew. This, his first publshed work, is a concerted attack on the idea of natural religion as propounded by the Deists, particularly in the influential writings of Lord Edward Herbert (1581-1648). In four sections separately paginated: Preface signed: Ja. Hog.; "Oratio inauguralis habita Andreapoli, .. " by Archibald Pitcairne with a separate titlepage. Separate title pages for: An Essay Concerning the Naure of Faith, or the Ground upon which Faith Assents to the Scriptures (and) A Modest Enquiry Whether Regeneration or Justification has the Precedency in Order of Nature.
