About This Item
New York: Putnam, 1952. First edition. Hardcover. fine/near fine. First edition. 308 pps. illustrated with photos. One of the highly sought-after Putnam Sports Series of baseball team histories. The story of the New York Giants from their inception as a National League member in 1883 (the franchise was shifted from Troy, N.Y. where it was known as the "Haymakers".) The Giants were baseball's elite in the first two decades of the 20th century, playing in the Polo Grounds and led by fiery manager John McGraw and starring immortal pitcher and American idol Christy Mathewson. While the Ruthian Yankees captured most of the baseball world's attention, the Giants continued to win in the 20s and 30s with stars such as Mel Ott, Bill Terry and Carl Hubbell. They would fall on hard times in the 1940s but resume winning with the advent of Willie Mays in 1951. A fine, fresh copy in a crisp, bold dust jacket, one of the nicest we have seen, price clipped, with a trace of spine fade and a small crease at the top border of the front panel.
