William Steig (1907-2003) was an American cartoonist,sculptor, illustrator and writer of children's books. Hailed as the 'King of Cartoons', he began working for The New Yorker in 1930, producing 2,600 drawings and 117 covers. As an author, he is best known for the picture books Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, Abel's Island and Doctor DeSoto. He was also the creator of Shrek.
