Reader reviews for Nineteen Eighty-Four (Everyman's Library Classics series)
Review summary
Readers widely regard George Orwell’s 1984 as a foundational and frighteningly relevant dystopia. They praise its rigorous world-building, the invention of Newspeak, and its searing critique of surveillance, propaganda, and authoritarian power, noting how strongly it resonates with contemporary politics. Many found the experience bleak, unsettling, and intellectually bracing, with the Winston–Julia thread adding human stakes. Common reservations cite dry, essayistic passages—especially the Goldstein treatise—and relatively thin characterization, yet most conclude it’s a demanding but essential read.
