About This Item

Edmonds, Washington: Pacific Fast Mail, 1977. First Edition. Hardcover in Dust Jacket and Slipcase. Fine/Fine. Mike Pearsall. Oblong 4to. Pp. [2], 3-381. Richly illustrated throughout with black-and-white and color photo reproductions, with many in fold-out format. Bibliography. Photo-illustrated endpapers. Bound in bright red cloth with gilt locomotive stamped on front board, gilt lettering on spine. In the color-illustrated dust jacket, price of $29.50 intact on front flap. The slipcase shows just a trifle edge-wear. Signed by Pearsall on the front free endpaper. Laid in is a 1972 reprint of the Great Northern "Time Tables and Equipment" brochure, that includes menus, as well as an original 1938 promotional announcement from the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad Company releasing "Attractive Low Fares For Your Vacation This Summer" (please see last photo). A lavish book production with little expense spared in glorifying the laborious effort of mountain locomotives. As the first chapter title has it, "4-8-2 Spells Mountain." An especially fresh copy.
