About This Item
Bundaberg, QLD: Corkwood Press, 1996. Facsimile ed.. Hardback small folio, no jacket as issued, very good plus condition, red boards (gilt lettering spine & front cover), glossy paper, full-page colour plates at rear, large colour foldout map with notes bound inside rear cover, minimal edgewear 43 pp. This is the facsimile reprint edition of Alex Forrestâs expedition into the unknown country of the Kimberley district of Western Australia. From February to September 1879 he and his men travelled from the DeGrey River on the northwest coast of Western Australia to the Overland Telegraph line in Central Australia, which opened up a very large area of pastoral country for future settlers. In 1979 the Alexander Forrest Centenary Expedition followed the route taken in 1879 and the two most significant discoveries were the finding of the F69 tree near King Sound and the F197 tree at the Depot Camp 100 miles west of the Overland Telegraph Line. On the 31st of August 1979, exactly one hundred years after Forrest and Hicks reached the telegraph line, a plaque was placed on a cairn at that point approximately 32 miles north of Daly Waters. This edition, published by Corkwood Press in 1990, makes his journal (originally published in 1880) available to all interested in the exploration of Australia. (No 166 of a limited edition of 400 copies, the first 75 of which are bound in half leather. 43 pages + 16 pages of 8 plates at rear. No ISBN printed in book.).
