On letterhead of the Royal Princess's Theatre, London ('LESSEE & MANAGER, MR. WILSON BARRETT.'). 10 April 1884.. 2pp., 12mo. On first leaf of a bifolium, the blank second leaf of which is laid down on a leaf of yellow paper removed from an album. In good condition, lightly-aged. He thanks her for her letter, '& the good opinion you express upon the performance'. He hopes to accept her invitation when he no longer labours under 'the heavy pressure of work, now rather weighing me down'.

On letterhead of Hedingham, 21 Maresfield Gardens, South Hampstead, London. 28 April 1888.. 2pp., 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. Barrett writes: 'Dear Hall Caine/ | The scheme promises well. I have made an arrangement for eight weeks at the Princess's. I thought it better to fight for the play there. Will certainly have a fair chance, although there can be no .' According to Barrett's entry in the Oxford DNB, he returned from the Globe Theatre 'to the Princess's, where he began work with Hall Caine on adapting The Deemster, renamed Ben-my-chree (17 May 1888). It was his only real success, and he added it to his repertory on his second American tour, which began in Boston on 14 October 1889, and this time took in St Louis and San Francisco.'

October 18, 1886., 1886.. Good. - "Love like a poet is not made but born" is penned on a 3-3/8 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide card and signed "Clito" and "Wilson Barrett / Oct 18 / 86". There are 2 chips & slight soiling to the right hand edge of the card. Scraps of paper adhere to the verso where the card has been removed from an album. Good. <p>Wilson Barrett [1846-1904] was an English theatre manager, actor and playwright. Barrett and his company were credited with attracting the largest crowds of English theatre goers because of his success with melodrama. His most successful play both in England and the United States, was "The Sign of the Cross" [1895].<p>"Clito" was a play by Sydney Grundy in which Barrett performed the principle role in 1886.
