About This Item

London : George Routledge and Sons Ltd., c1875. Leather. Very Good. 9" by 6". George Cruikshank and Hablot K Browne (Phiz).. A nice set of William Harrison Ainsworth's novels. Ainsworth was known for his fantastic works of historical fiction. This collection comprises of sixteen volumes of Ainsworth's works, the complete set of this publication. Illustrated throughout with hundreds of plates and vignettes across all volumes. Collated, complete with all plates. The works present are as follows: Jack Sheppard, Chrichton, Lancashire Witches, Auriol, Old St Pauls, Guy Fawkes, The Spendthrift, The Star Chamber, Boscobel, Miser's Daughter, Rookwood, Flitch of Bacon, Tower of London , Mervyn Clitheroe, Windsor Castle and Ovingdean Grange. The illustrations throughout volumes are by two famous illustrators of the day George Cruikshank and Hablot K Browne (Phiz). The set is undated and therefore dated from Copac. In a lovely Bickers and Son Binding. In half calf bindings with cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart with minor rubbing to the joints and to the spines. Rubbing is heavier to the head and tail. Small loss to the head of spines to Flitch of Bacon, Crichton and The Star Chamber. Front hinge of Boscobel is slightly strained but firm. Binder's stamp indicate a Bickers and Son binding. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned with some offsetting from plates. Instances of light scattered spots, tending to form at the first and last few pages. Very Good
