Description:
This book is bound with leather covers and a cloth spine. There is a label on the front cover which is not readable. New endsheets have been added at some point in the book's long history, but the original endsheets and covers are present. There is a former owner's inscription on the original front endsheet. Pages are intact and the binding is tight. The book contains black & white drawings of muscles, bones, and bandages. There is an index for medicines and an extensive table of contents of body parts, diseases, syndromes, and treatments. Printed in the year 1846, the book itself is, in essence, a time capsule that portrays how medicine was practiced aboard an early nineteenth century sailing ship. This will make a wonderful addition to the library of the collector of medical memorabilia.

Very good copy with near fine plates depicting Greek, Roman, Etruscan and Egyptian military armour, weapons, chariots, ships, sandals, boxing gloves or cestus, musical instruments, hairstyles, vases, lamps, candelabra, tripods, friezes, statues and furniture taken from ancient classical monuments and sculptures.
Engraved title page and 100 unnumbered engraved plates each with an engraved caption within the plate. A follow up to Raccolta di Cento Tavole rappresentanti i Costumi Religiosi Civili, e Militari published in 1804.
Copperplate engravings by Pietro Ruga after designs by Lorenzo Roccheggiani. No date on title page, but all engravings dated 1806 within the plate.
Roccheggiani was an Italian draughtsman and engraver active from 1788 to 1817, producing many books on classical design for the use of professors of the fine arts (per uso de'Professori delle Belle Arti).
Ruga (died 1850s?) was an Italian etcher who engraved architectural views of monuments, maps, and topographic views of Rome.
Oblong quarto in half leather, 5mm loss from top of spine, 4cm crack to front hinge, lilac leather title label, bright gilt tooling, paper boards with a few stains. Interior clean with no foxing, fine strong impressions on thick wove paper.

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
