The Oakland Motor Car Company (named for Oakland County, Michigan) was acquired by General Motors in 1909 after the death of its founder, Edward Murphy. The GM automobile lineup at the time included Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Buick, and eventually Cadillac, with Oakland placed between Chevy and Olds in price and luxury features. During the 1920s, Oakland introduced the Pontiac model, which sold at a price between Chevrolets and Oaklands. With Pontiacs outselling Oaklands, GM discontinued the make in 1931.
